Part four, and the end of the series.
The first three pieces were all about the value of a conversation. This one is about what the conversation does and doesn't do.
Start with what it doesn't do. It doesn't make the estate bigger. It doesn't make anyone less sad. It doesn't settle who should have gotten the lake house, and it won't stop two siblings who have been arguing since 2002 from arguing.
What it does change is both narrower and bigger than that. Nobody is guessing.
That is the whole return. When somebody dies, a family faces a series of decisions, a few of them on the clock, in a stretch of weeks when nobody is thinking clearly. What to sell. What to keep. Who does what. Whether Dad would have wanted the business sold or held. What did Mom want with the cottage again?
Every family is building the same puzzle. The one that had the conversation has the box top propped up on a stand where everybody can see it. The one that didn't has a pile of pieces and an argument about what the picture is supposed to be.
Either way, a piece is probably missing. Only one of them can see which one.
Same estate. Same amount of money. Very different few months.
The reasoning is the part that survives you. A will and beneficiary forms say who gets what. There is no why field. And the why is what holds a family together afterward. Uneven with a reason tends to hold up. Uneven without one gets read as a verdict on who you loved more.
You and your spouse are the only ones who can supply the reason. Nobody can do it later on your behalf.
This is what the whole series has been about. The damage comes from surprise, not from size. Every piece has been one version or another of removing the surprise while you are still here to remove it.
None of it requires a lawyer. Most of it doesn't require money. It requires a Sunday afternoon and a willingness to be uncomfortable for an hour.
That is the whole cost.
